Ananya Sanyal is a Senior
Associate at Brus Chambers,
with a distinguished practice focused on infrastructure projects, shipping and
maritime law, marine insurance including Protection & Indemnity (P&I)
claims, and complex commercial litigation and arbitration. With a reputation for
analytical precision and strategic thinking, she plays an instrumental role
within several of the firms core practice groups, including Infrastructure
& Projects, Shipping & Maritime, and the Arbitration & Dispute
Resolution team.
Ananyas practice spans
contentious and non-contentious work across a wide spectrum of infrastructure
and shipping-related mandates. She is routinely instructed in high-value
commercial disputes, including domestic and international arbitrations, and acts
in advisory, transactional, and enforcement-related matters. She is known for
her deep understanding of commercial risk, meticulous approach to documentation,
and her ability to distill legally and technically dense subject matter into
actionable strategy.
Ananya has substantial
experience advising on large-scale infrastructure projects, including those in
the energy, transportation, urban development, and logistics sectors. She
routinely works on matters involving EPC (engineering, procurement and
construction) contracts, PPP (public-private partnership) frameworks, concession
agreements, turnkey construction agreements, and related commercial contracts.
Her advisory work includes
reviewing project documentation from both a contractual and regulatory
standpoint, assisting clients in contract structuring, risk allocation,
milestone enforcement, and default response strategies. She has acted for public
sector undertakings, private infrastructure developers, foreign contractors, and
institutional investors in navigating complex contractual frameworks under
Indian law, particularly in relation to the Specific Relief Act, Contract Act,
and Arbitration and Conciliation Act.
She has particular
expertise in infrastructure arbitrations, both ad hoc and institutional,
including under ICA, SIAC, and UNCITRAL rules. In these matters, Ananya
represents clients in disputes arising out of construction delays, variation
claims, change orders, cost overruns, force majeure events, non-payment, and
termination-related issues.
Ananyas capabilities in
the shipping sector are broad-based and internationally oriented. She has
represented shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, marine insurers, and cargo
interests in a variety of matters involving both wet and dry shipping issues.
Her experience includes ship arrest and release proceedings before various
Indian High Courts under the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime
Claims) Act, charterparty disputes, cargo claims, bunker disputes, crew injury
and wage claims, and salvage and collision cases.
She is deeply engaged in shipping
arbitrations, advising on both domestic and international matters
involving the enforcement and breach of charterparty terms (including NYPE,
GENCON, and other industry-standard forms), demurrage claims, seaworthiness
issues, and contractual defaults. Her arbitration work also includes
representation in London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA)-style disputes
governed by English law and conducted under foreign institutional rules.
Ananya frequently advises
on the interpretation and enforceability of clauses relating to jurisdiction,
governing law, limitation, laytime, and indemnity provisions, and has earned a
reputation for providing clients with commercially sound, litigation-ready
advice tailored to the realities of cross-border maritime commerce.
She has acted extensively
in Protection & Indemnity
(P&I) matters, offering front-end advisory and dispute management
services for claims involving third-party liabilities, cargo damage, pollution
liability, stowaway issues, and personal injury to crew members. She regularly
liaises with shipowners and correspondents across jurisdictions and is familiar
with standard P&I Club processes, coverage issues, and subrogation rights.
In addition, she advises
marine underwriters, hull insurers, and P&I Clubs in marine
insurance claims, including issues relating to breach of warranties,
duty of disclosure, seaworthiness, insurable interest, and indemnity disputes.
She is well-versed in policy review, claims evaluation, and litigation strategy,
particularly in claims arising from hull damage, grounding, total loss, and
third-party liabilities.
Ananya also maintains a
robust practice in commercial
litigation and arbitration, handling disputes involving joint ventures,
shareholder conflicts, sale of goods, services contracts, and debt recovery. She
advises clients in both institutional and ad hoc arbitrations under various
rules (ICA, SIAC, LCIA, ICC) and across multiple sectors. Her role includes
drafting notices of arbitration, statements of claim and defence, interim
applications, and enforcement petitions under Indian law.
She regularly appears
before the Bombay High Court,
Delhi High Court, and other
fora for commercial suits, Section 9 interim relief petitions, Section 11
appointment of arbitrator applications, and Section 34/Section 36 enforcement
and challenge proceedings. She also supports enforcement of domestic and foreign
arbitral awards and foreign judgments within India.
Her experience includes
handling complex multi-party disputes, including those involving cross-border
elements, multiple jurisdictions, and regulatory overlays. Her litigation
strategies are appreciated by clients for their clarity, efficiency, and
effectiveness, particularly in high-stakes matters where time-sensitive relief
is sought.
Ananya Sanyals legal
practice exemplifies the multidisciplinary approach that is the hallmark of Brus
Chambers. Her domain expertise across infrastructure, shipping, marine
insurance, and commercial disputesboth advisory and contentiousmakes her a
vital asset to clients operating in capital-intensive, contractually intricate,
and regulatorily sensitive sectors.
A precise and pragmatic
lawyer, Ananya brings not only technical excellence but also strategic foresight
to each assignment. Her ability to understand the business and operational
realities of her clients enables her to craft legal solutions that are both
commercially viable and enforceable. She is widely recognised within the firm
and by clients for her responsiveness, work ethic, and clarity of legal thought.
Ananya continues to make

mandates, while simultaneously supporting clients with complex infrastructure
and maritime challenges in a fast-evolving legal and commercial landscape.
